environment bioremediation

Our facility at Sumatra Operations, Indonesia.

Bioremediation is a safe and proven method to treat waste soil from oil operations using naturally occurring microorganisms. Over a three-to-six-month treatment cycle, the oil compounds are eaten by the microbes turning the compounds into water and harmless gases. The process returns the soil to its natural state.

Bioremediation is an established global practice in industrial applications, such as petrochemical facilities and shipping and rail yards. It is endorsed by government bodies around the world.

PT. Chevron Pacific Indonesia (PT CPI) has partnered with the Indonesian Ministry of Environment, government agencies and environmental experts to pioneer the use of bioremediation in Indonesia as an effective and environmentally responsible soil remediation technique. We have worked together to design, implement and oversee a successful bioremediation program that helps PT CPI and the Government of Indonesia to meet national oil production goals in an environmentally responsible manner.

PT CPI currently operates nine bioremediation facilities at our operations in Riau Province, Sumatra, covering an area of more than 10 acres, with a combined capacity of remediating approximately 42,000 cubic meters of soil per treatment cycle.

Since 2003, using bioremediation technology, we have successfully treated more than half a million cubic meters of soil, the equivalent of 200 Olympic-sized swimming pools. The treated soil has been used for the re-greening of 60 hectares of land in Riau Province, the equivalent of approximately 75 football fields.
