Barrow Island is located 30 nautical miles (around 60 kilometres) from the mainland and approximately 75 nautical miles west of the Port of Dampier. It's also home to theGorgon Project.

Mariners are advised that entry to the Port of Barrow Island is restricted and permission must first be obtained from the Barrow Island Marine Controller on VHF Channel 10 prior to entering port limits.
The Port maintains a listening watch on VHF channel 10 and 16 from:
- 0600 – 1700 daily
- 1hr prior to pilot boarding

Port entry is restricted and under the control of Barrow Island Marine Superintendent due to the extensive vessel activity making navigation by non-project vessels, without prior notice, hazardous.
The pilot boarding ground is located in the vicinity of latitude 20° 48.6'S and longitude of 115° 36.0'E.
All vessels operating within the Barrow Island port limits are to have onboard a marine pilot licensed under the1966年运输和飞行员（港口及港口）法规issued by the Western Australian Department of Transport, unless the vessel's Master holds a valid Pilotage Exemption Certificate for the Port of Barrow Island.
